Senden finds spark on Sunday

It’s been an indifferent season on the PGA TOUR for John Senden to date but the sweet swinging Queenslander might have found something in the final round at this week’s RBC Heritage Classic where a best of the day 6-under 65 vaulted him more than 30 places up the leaderboard.

It’s been an indifferent season on the PGA TOUR for John Senden to date but the sweet swinging Queenslander might have found something in the final round at this week’s RBC Heritage Classic where a best of the day 6-under 65 vaulted him more than 30 places up the leaderboard.

In 12 starts since the wraparound season began last October, Senden has missed five cuts and posted just one top-10 finish but his play on Sunday at Hilton Head suggests he has found something in his game.

The Harbour Town layout is not noted for giving up low scores with only one other round of 65 shot for the entire week, by Scotland’s Russell Knox in the second round.

Senden was at his ball striking best on the final day finding all 18 greens in regulation and could have shot even lower with several birdie efforts shaving the hole.

The narrow fairways and tiny greens at the Pete Dye designed course expose any flaws in a player’s game and to hit all 18 putting surfaces is a feat in itself.

"I was hoping to get something in the red today and to shoot 65 was a bonus," Senden told the PGA TOUR website after his round.

"I played solid and knocked a few more putts in and kept the bogies off the card."

Having struggled the first three days Senden’s good play lifted him to a share of 23rd but more importantly will give him confidence for the rest of the season.

Aaron Baddeley took honours as top Australian after another good week capped off by a solid 3-under final round to climb into the top-10.

The Victorian’s T9 finish was his fourth top-10 of the season already despite playing with limited status, the consistent play putting him in excellent position to regain the TOUR card he lost at the end of 2015.

Baddeley has moved to 70th on the FedEx Cup points list this season and with the top-125 earning automatic membership for next year he is now all but assured a place in 2017.

World Number 1 Jason Day started the week well in South Carolina after a good showing at the US Masters but ran out of momentum in a shock Saturday round.

Day took a share of the 36-hole lead into the third round but with the course playing difficult he slipped back through the field with a disappointing 79.

He hit back Sunday with an impressive round of 3-under 68 to restore some pride and move to T23 alongside John Senden and will now take a well earned break after playing four of the last five weeks.

Marc Leishman was solid all week to shoot even par for the four days and finish T30 while Geoff Ogilvy didn’t set the world alight with his T54 finish but, after making just his third cut for the year, will take some positives from the week.

Rookie Ryan Ruffels fought hard to overcome a disastrous opening nine holes of the tournament but came up one shot shy.

The 17-year-old teed off the 10th on Thursday but went to the turn 5-over after making five bogies, four of them consecutively from the 12th.

A 1-under second nine, and a 1-under 70 in round two, are testament to the teenager’s character but ultimately it was one shot too many to make the weekend.

Stuart Appleby will be equally disappointed with his play after opening with a 2-under 69 to be just outside the top-10 but limping to a second round 79 to miss the cut.

Matt Jones and Robert Allenby also missed the weekend’s action after indifferent play in the opening two rounds.
