With wet weather predicted pre-tournament, Adam Scott discussed how he believed the course would play much easier if it was softened.
"With rain? Much, much easier," said Scott, in his pre-tournament press conference.
"I was here a week and a half ago, and it was playing nice and firm. I played a round in firm conditions."
"It rained a lot that night, and we came out, and I played the next day with Rory, and both of us probably made five or six birdies each that day, playing really nice."
The predicted weather certainly hit during Thursday’s play with storms causing delays. Torrential rain then flooded the fairways and greens causing round 1 to be suspended until Friday.
During practice rounds, players were talking about just how fast the Oakmont greens were.
Tomorrow they will probably be facing a slightly different prospect.
"The greens become receptive," said Scott.
"The fairways become slightly wider because a ball down the edge of the fairway doesn’t run out into the rough. It stays in the fairway."
"Even though it may play longer, I think it will play much easier if it rains."
However green speed isn’t the only challenging factor at Oakmont, the slope also presents an obstacle and that won’t change after the wild weather.
"Every factor of the game is a huge test here at Oakmont, and the greens get a lot of attention. I think it’s going to be tough for everybody they’re so severe, probably the most severe greens we’re going to putt on this year," added Scott.
"It’s going to be difficult because we’re not always used to seeing so much slope on the greens."
"You know, from ten feet and in, I think guys who putt well, will still make putts, but once you start getting out beyond that ten-foot range, there’s so much movement in the greens."
"It’s very, very hard to putt it up close like we’re used to doing on normal Tour greens. I think it’s probably going to challenge everybody this week."
