Scott hot with experts at Valspar

A 10 person panel from the TOUR each select a four player fantasy team each week and Scott features in seven of the teams for this week’s event in Florida.

Each panellist also nominates a winner of the tournament and Scott gets two votes in this department, the same number as Henrik Stenson though one less than Jim Furyk.

The Queenslander obviously did plenty to impress the judges at his first event for 2015 last week despite switching from the broomstick putter for the first time since 2011.

Scott’s putting stats at Doral were better than all but eight weeks of his four years with the long putter and if that form continues it could be a huge year for the World Number 5.

While the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook hasn’t been a regular stop on Scott’s schedule over the years his late start to the season means he needs some tournaments under his belt to get ready for the upcoming Masters and this week will be a good gauge of where his game is at.

His record at Innisbrook is relatively poor with two missed cuts in five appearances and a best result of T28 in 2010.

He will expect more of himself this week and if he can place in the top 10 on a course which is obviously not to his liking it will be a positive sign for Augusta.

While Scott has grabbed most of the attention among the seven strong Australian contingent not everybody has forgotten defending champion John Senden.

One of the 10 PGA TOUR panellists picked Senden in his four person team, though not to win, and that seems a good bet for the Queenslander at a venue where he has produced several good results.

Senden has teed up at the tournament 11 times and while he has missed the cut twice has back to back runner-up finishes in 2007 and 2008 to go with his win last year.

After a disappointing over-par weekend at Doral Senden will benefit from the good memories of returning to a layout he has won on and might be just the boost he needs to break a run of indifferent form.

He hasn’t finished better than 25th since January and missed his first cut of the season at the Honda a fortnight ago.

Joining Scott and Senden this week are Robert Allenby, Steven Bowditch, Marc Leishman, Greg Chalmers and Rod Pampling.

Both Chalmers and Pampling will be keen to produce their best stuff this week as each tries to play their way back on to the PGA TOUR through limited starts.

Chalmers has a love/hate relationship with the Innisbrook course having missed the cut five times in nine starts but posting a T4 result in 2013.

He has made the weekend in each of his last three starts here and will be looking to build on some decent play from the final three rounds at Doral where an opening 77 cruelled his chances early.

Pampling will have even less starts on the main TOUR than Chalmers this year as he relies primarily on tournament invites to tee up.

He, too, has a mixed history at Innisbrook with three top 10’s and three missed cuts in eight tries but he comes to Florida off a good result in Puerto Rico.

A double bogey at the 13th hole of the final round was the only thing standing between the two time TOUR winner and a place in a five man play-off for the title and he could surprise a few this week.

Neither Leishman, Allenby or Bowditch have good history at the tournament with just one top 10 between them, Allenby’s T6 in 2004.
