Adam Scott has won his 12th PGA TOUR title securing a one shot victory over Sergio Garcia to claim the Honda Classic in Florida.

Firing an even final round of 70, Scott ended regulation play on 9-under 271 to claim the title and his first victory on the PGA TOUR since the Crowne Plaza Invitational in 2014.

"I hit a lot of good putts, not as many went in as yesterday, but this is a tough track it’s hard to get it close all the time. I played exceptional yesterday so I had to reel in my expectations today," said Scott.

"I got off to a good start and made a birdie on the first and definitely relaxed me. I hit a lot of good putts, some didn’t go in, fortunately it was enough in the end."  

"It’s a good feeling to hit a putt and see it go in the hole, like any round. I got off to a dream start to set the pace and make sure it was me and Sergio for the whole day."

Making just his fifth start of the PGA TOUR season this week, Scott came to the PGA National on the back of a T2 finish at last week’s Northern Trust Open.

Scott opened his final round with a birdie and by the par three 5th hole held a two shot lead. His shot of the day came on the par 4 12th with a fairway bunker shot landing less than one metre from the pin to set up birdie.

After a disastrous quadruple bogey at the par 3 15th hole during round three, Scott negotiated the notorious three-hole Bear Trap in 1-over.

"Things got tough out there at times, but that’s expected, and the wind was slightly different today but it was nice to hit some good quality shots coming in and luckily for me it was just enough," added Scott.

Garcia acknowledged his game wasn’t where it needed to be to win and that Scott was the better player today.

"He deserved it. I’m proud of the way I hung in there, but I don’t feel like my swing is anywhere near where I want it to be. I scored nicely, I putted well, I chipped quite well but Adam played great, he played better than me," said Garcia.

With this win, Scott becomes just the second Australian to win The Honda Classic since its 1972 inception after Stuart Appleby won the event in 1997. He is also the first player to switch from anchored strokes and win a PGA TOUR event.

Scott has moved up 13 places on the FedEx Cup standing and now sits at number three.

Scott’s win overshadowed and excellent week for fellow Queenslander John Senden who posted his best ever result in the Florida event. Senden finished T10 after a 1-over 71 closing round, four shots better than Stuart Appleby who jumped 23 places to T37 after a 2-under 68 on Sunday.
