A brilliant bogey-free round of 7-under 65 has vaulted Anthony Quayle to his second top-10 finish on the Japan Golf Tour season, finishing tied for seventh at the Kansai Open Golf Championship.

Making the cut seemed unlikely when the Queenslander opened with a 4-over par 76 to be tied for 126th but he was 17-under for the final 54 holes to move inside the top-10, six shots behind winner Tomoharu Otsuki, who defeated Rikuya Hoshino at the first hole of a playoff for his maiden win on tour.

In his second season in Japan, Quayle was tied for fifth in his last start at The Crowns tournament and moved to 21st on the Order of Merit courtesy of his latest high finish.

Six birdies and no bogeys in a second round of 66 was enough for Quayle to squeeze inside the cut line by a shot and he continued his upward trend over the weekend, moving into a tie for 16th after a third round of 4-under 68.

The first of his seven birdies on Sunday didn’t come until the fourth hole but he made two more before the turn and then catching fire with the putter on his way in.

He needed just five putts across his final five holes and only 25 for the round, picking up shots at each of his final three holes to make a late surge up the leaderboard.

Like Quayle, David Bransdon and Matthew Griffin also made positive progress in the final round, the pair both shooting 4-under 68 to move into a tie for 16th, the finish solidifying Griffin’s position in the top five on the moneylist.

After beginning the tournament with a 3-under 69 former Kansai Open champion Brad Kennedy also finished strongly with a 5-under 67 to end the week tied for 36th, the lone Kiwi in the field, Michael Hendry, missing the cut.
