Qantas Golf Club members from across Australia congregated on Melbourne’s famous Sandbelt this week for the first Qantas Golf Club Pro-Am for 2017.
Golfers were granted access to three of the best private courses for the event. Monday saw blustery conditions as they took to Metropolitan Golf Club.
27 Teams consisting of three Qantas Golf Club Members match with PGA Professionals of the likes of Jarrod Lyle, David McKenzie, Terry Price, Jin Jeong and John Wade in a Team Stableford event.
It was the team from Cypress Lakes lead by PGA Professional Ben Clementson with amateurs Gavin Mayfield, Tony Finn and martin Stewart who handled the lightening fast greens at Metro the best, handing in a combined team score of 94 Stableford points.
However it was PGA Tour Member Jarrod Lyle heading the pack of Professionals tied with Simon Hawkes and Quinton Howe on 2-under 69.
A heavy overnight shower took some of the sting out of Kingston Heath for day two. The course was looking in almost better condition than it was for the recent World Cup of Golf and the scoring was just as good.
Ben Clementson lead his team to a day two win with another supreme effort of 96 points to take their two day total to 190, six points clear of Glenn Joyner’s team.
Coming off his recent 4th position at the Oates Vic Open, David McKenzie took the lead after a quality 6-under 66 (4-under total). Leaving him going into the third and final day, one clear of Simon Hawkes (3-under) with Jarrod Lyle a further shot back on 2-under after and even par second round.
Tight final round pin positions and a strong northerly breeze tested the entire field. It was David McKenzie with a final round 2-under par 70 who took out the 2017 Qantas Golf Club Pro-Am with three round 6-under par 209 total.
“What a great concept this is the QANTAS Golf Club, giving golfers the chance to play some of the best courses in the world,” McKenzie said.
“This was not your normal Pro-Am, everyone who entered I can see are really keen golfers and the chance to play Metropolitan, Kingston Heath and Yarra Yarra on the Melbourne Sandbelt doesn’t come around too often, so I really thank Robbie, James and Greg at the Qantas Golf Club for having me.”
Taking out the teams event after a final round 94 Stableford points and a three round total of 278 to win by two was the team lead by PGA Professional Glenn Joyner, who birdied five of his last seven holes.
“It’s been great to play three fantastic courses with three of my best mates,” Joyner, who also played the Qantas Golf Club Pro-Am in Fiji last year said.
The Qantas Pro-Am series consisted of three Stroke play rounds across Metropolitan Golf Club, Kingston Heath Golf Club and Yarra Yarra Golf Club on the Melbourne Sandbelt. The total prize purse was $72,500 with a limited field of just 27 professionals in the field.
