Peter Thomson celebrates historic milestone

Peter Thomson joined some of the world’s greatest Professionals at St Andrews on Wednesday for a four-hole charity event ahead of The Open.

"1507_Peter_Thompson_790"In a treat for fans, the Champion Golfers’ Challenge was a nostalgic affair that brought together some of the world’s greatest golfers each with the distinction of having won The Open, including
Tom Watson, Sir Nick Faldo, Gary Player and Arnold Palmer.

Thomson captained group four teeing off with Ben Curtis, Ernie Els and Phil Mickelson in what was a special occasion that marked the 60th anniversary of his (second) Open victory at St Andrews in 1955, while his life long friend and fellow Open winner, Kel Nagle, was also remembered.

As a five-time Open Champion, Thomson was the last Professional to win three consecutive Open Championships. Earlier in the week the 86-year-old was jovial about his form today.

"It would be ridiculous for me to try and beat somebody like Tom Watson," said Thomson in a recent interview with The Scotsman.

"I don’t count any more but I’ve a fair notion of what my score would be if I did."""

In the 155th year of golf’s oldest Major, the light-hearted best-ball four-hole challenge saw seven groups play the 1st, 2nd, 17th and 18th holes of the Old Course.

A cheeky eagle on the second assisted Palmer’s team of Darren Clarke, Paul Lawrie and Bill Rogers snared victory together with a prize purse of £50,000 for donation to a charity of the winning teams choice.

1991 Open Champion Ian Baker-Finch also took part along with team captain Tom Watson, Todd Hamilton and Louis Oosthuizen.
