Eighteen years since his last win on European soil, Aussie legend Peter O’Malley is closing in on his breakthrough win on the Staysure Tour, the European Tour’s over-50s circuit.

"PeterRunner-up at last week’s Swiss Seniors Open, O’Malley has two other top-15 finishes to his name this season and along with Peter Fowler makes up the Australian contingent contesting this week’s European Tour Destinations Senior Classic at the PGA Catalunya Resort in Spain.

Now 54 years of age, the last of O’Malley’s three European Tour wins came at the 2001 Compass Group English Open, his last win of note coming in 2010 at the NSW Open.

Currently 15th on the Staysure Tour Order of Merit, O’Malley will be hoping to build towards The Senior Open Championship at Royal Lytham and St Anne’s at the end of the month, a venue where he missed the cut at The Open twice in 1996 and 2001.

A top-50 finisher at the two Senior majors played in America already this year, Fowler is a six-time winner on the European Seniors Tour and has finished in the top five in each of the past two years that the tournament has been held, first in Finland and last year in Bulgaria.

Kiwi Greg Turner rounds out the Australasians in the field.

The Challenge Tour is in France this week for the Le Vaudreuil Golf Challenge where Aussies Jordan Zunic and Ben Eccles are joined by New Zealand’s Josh Geary in the field at Golf PGA France du Vaudreuil.

Geary is riding a hot hand at present having finished runner-up last week and moving to 21st on the Order of Merit, the top 15 at the end of the year earning European Tour cards for 2020.
