Negatively influenced by outside forces in previous Presidents Cup tournaments, Internationals captain Greg Norman says he won’t premeditate match-ups and shield Adam Scott from a showdown with Tiger Woods at Royal Melbourne next week.
Woods and Scott have not been paired together since the American severed ties with controversial Kiwi caddie Steve Williams, who now carries Scott’s bag.
Williams has been feuding with Woods since his demotion following the golf superstar’s dramatic fall from grace two years ago, labelling him a ‘black a…hole’ in a recent outburst.
Williams and Woods avoided each other at The Lakes as the Australia Open unfolded this week but may come eye to eye if the former world number one is pitted against Scott at the Presidents Cup.
Norman, who along with American captain Fred Couples will decide the Presidents Cup match-ups, won’t let the drama dictate his plan of attack.
"If it happens, it happens. It is not going to be premeditated," he declared.
"I talked to Adam about it (and) asked him if it worked out that way, did he have a problem with it."
"He said: ‘Not at all. I’ll play him and win a point for you’."
"It can fall that way. He might end up playing with him every day. Who knows?"
"I’d expect them to meet some time from Thursday onwards."
"I don’t think it will affect either Tiger or Adam."
Norman’s tougher stance on potential match-ups is in stark contrast to his approach as captain of the 2009 Internationals team.
The Shark felt he consulted too many people and tried to keep his players happy by avoiding clashes with friends in the American team.
The Americans won easily.
"My captaincy will be a little different this time," Norman warned.
"I am going to be more a captain instead of seeking advice and other people’s opinions and trying to make everybody happy."
"You’ve got to make the decisions (and) by making those firm decisions, the guys will realise that this is the captain speaking, this is what he wants us to do."
"This year I am going to say ‘you are going to play and this is who you are going to play and you are going to put some points on the board’."
"I am a little more assertive, I would say."
