Today kicked off the first round of the Roy Hill Port Hedland Classic, the second last event of the Ladbrokes WA Pro-Am Series swing.
The calibre of players in the field such as Michael Long, Rick Kulacz, past winner Peter Cooke and recent swing winners Brody Martin and Braden Becker, it has once again proven to be one of the players favourite stops on the calendar.
Warm weather and strong winds made the unique sand green layout a lot tighter off the tee but his week’s winner won’t just need to have the best golf technique, they’ll need to have a great scrape technique also to maximise their opportunities on the greens.
Kris Mueck was the one who shot out of the box firing the round of the day, with 7 birdies and 1 eagle for a bogey free 9-under 63 around the par 72 layout.
Kris is no stranger to sand greens growing up playing at Apsley GC near Naracoorte.
“This is my third time playing the Port Hedland Classic, it’s such a cool event and I just feel really comfortable around the course,” said Mueck
WA’s Jason Chellew is Mueck’s closest chaser 4 behind on 5-under 67 followed by Ben Ford (VIC), Aaron Pike (QLD), Andrew Crabb (WA) and Mitchell Jacobson (QLD) tied on 4-under 68.
