Marc Leishman’s consistent 2017 has continued at the PGA TOUR’s Travelers Championship with the Victorian again taking top Australian honours.
Leishman, a former champion at TPC River Highlands, fired rounds of 69-68-68-69 to be T17 and easily the pick of the 10 strong Australian contingent.
The laid back Victorian has been a model of consistency in 2017 and at 14th on the FedEx Cup standings is the leading Australian on the PGA TOUR.
Despite statistically below average driving and putting, Leishman relied on good iron play to keep his scorecard ticking over and managed his game well to make just five bogies and one double bogey for the week.
He also overcame a slow start Sunday where he made three bogeys and a birdie in his opening four holes to add three more birdies on his way to the clubhouse and shoot his fourth sub-70 score for the week.
Greg Chalmers was next best of the Australians seven shots behind Leishman and T66 while Geoff Ogilvy and Rod Pampling were both T69 at 2-over.
Ogilvy will have mixed feelings about his week after opening with a 73 but firing the second best round of the day Friday with a brilliant 65.
Cameron Percy missed the 54-hole cut after a third round 72 while Jason Day, Brett Coletta, Ryan Ruffels and Brett Drewitt all missed the cut.
Day will be especially disappointed with his week after also missing the cut at the U.S. Open and struggling in the opening round.
A drive out of bounds on the third hole of his opening round led to a double bogey and set the tone for the day and while he made a great start to the second round he ran out of momentum to miss the cut by two.
Brett Coletta struggled in the opening round of his third PGA TOUR start but despite posting 74 fought gamely on Friday to shoot under par.
He was on track to make the even par cut but an untimely double bogey at the par-5 13th in the second round, his only blemish among four birdies on that side, proved fatal.
Ryan Ruffels had the opposite week, a 1-over 71 Thursday leaving him within range of playing the weekend but a Friday 78 ending his hopes.
Stuart Appleby also opened with 71 but withdrew after Thursday’s first round.
