Victorian Deyen Lawson has captured the biggest victory of his young career, firing a final round 5-under 67 to claim a commanding six shot lead over fellow Victorian Adam Burdett at Riverside Oaks Resort. The second year PGA Trainee from Curlewis Golf Club opened his round with a birdie on the first hole to set up what would become a memorable day for the multiple pro-am winner and winner of six out of his last eight professional events
"My ball striking was really great all week and I certainly felt comfortable over the driver which is really important on this golf course" said Lawson.
Lawson has finished in second place in his first two Victorian PGA Trainee Championships and says it’s a great feeling to get the win in NSW this week.
With rounds of 70-71-69-67, Lawson was the only player in the field to shoot sub-par in each round.
"It was a great week all round and I really hope to make it back to this wonderful venue to defend my title in 2015," added Lawson.
Lawson and Charlestown Golf Club Trainee Jamie Hook began the final round tied for the lead, however by the 12th hole, Lawson had opened up a five shot lead over the field following three straight birdies starting on the par-5 10th.
Runner-up Burdett displayed why he too is a star in the making, proving that his runner-up finish at the recent Rich River Classic was no fluke.
"I love this golf course and the fast greens suit my style of game," said Burdett.
Riverside Oaks greenkeeper Glenn Gibson went above the call of duty and provided Burdett with some helpul insight as caddy for the final two rounds,
"It was great to have Glenn on the bag this week.
"He gave me some great reads but more importantly he helped me stay calm and take it one shot at a time," added the 19-yr-old Burdett who hails from Yarrawonga-Mulwala Golf Club.
Hook stumbled on the final day posting a seven-over-par 79 and finish in a tie for seventh.
Defending champion Richie Gallichan could never quite get going on the final two days although his final round 1-over 73 was good enough to claim outright third at 3-under total of 285.
The 23 yr-old Lawson proved why he is one of the brightest stars in Australian golf, overcoming advice from his physio not to play the event due to a ongoing back problem.
Deputy General Manager at Riverside Oaks Resort acknowledged that the club is excited to build upon the relationship with the PGA and the greater community are excited to host the upcoming NSW PGA Championships in December.
