Matt Jones made a brave final round charge but eventually came up shy after a late back nine stumble at the FedEx St Jude Classic.
Jones was applying plenty of pressure to leader Fabian Gomez early in the back nine and stood over a makeable birdie putt at the par-3 14th to pull within one shot.
But the effort slid by and with a clumsy bogey at the next, and unable to pick up a shot at the par-5 16th, the Sydneysider’s run came to an end.
Jones eventually finished at 8-under for the week, good enough for a share of third, but five shots behind winner Gomez.
While not in contention at the end it was also a good week for Cameron Percy whose final round 66, the equal second best score of the day, moved him inside the top 20 for just the third time this season.
After graduating from the Web.com Tour last year Percy has had trouble finding form in 2015 but a T10 at the Byron Nelson a fortnight ago coupled with this week’s T18 suggest his game is now trending in the right direction.
Steven Bowditch also posted a final round 66 but finished a shot behind Percy and T22 while Robert Allenby undid a lot of good work over the first three rounds with a Sunday 75.
Having historically played well at TPC Southwind Allenby teed off Sunday in a share of 40th place and with a chance to post his best finish of the year but a front nine 40 saw him tumble down the leader board to a T64 finish.
Aaron Baddeley was the last of the Australians to make the cut finishing 14-over for the week and in outright last place.
Greg Chalmers and Rod Pampling both missed the weekend by two shots.
