Hot scoring catches Aussies off guard

With the cut coming at 5-under par only one Australian survived the weekend of the News Sentinel Open on the Web.com Tour this week.

""The hot scoring saw four separate players sign for 9-under rounds of 62 at the Fox Den Country Club and a winning score of 26-under the card.

Scott Gardiner was the only Australian to advance to the weekend, his 7-under total through 36 holes a promising start to the week.

However, an even par round Saturday dropped him down the standings and a final round 68 eventually saw him finish 10-under for the week and T44.

Both Steve Allan and Brett Drewitt were just one shy of playing the weekend, Allan hitting back from an opening round 72 with a Friday 66 while Drewitt posted the opposite numbers, an opening 66 followed by a 1-over 72, to miss the cut.

The missed cut might prove costly for Allan who is on the verge of breaking into the top-75 on the money list and earning a place in the Finals series to compete for a 2017 PGA TOUR card.

A gutsy top-10 last week after a run of missed cuts pushed him to 82nd in the standings but with just one full field event remaining the pressure is on.

Likewise, Oliver Goss could ill afford to miss the weekend and heads to next week’s Winco Foods Portland Open in need of a high finish if he hopes to play for a 2017 PGA TOUR card.

Goss is 91st on the money list, one of only four Australians to be inside the top-100 who will keep playing rights for next year.

Rhein Gibson is the highest placed of the Australians at 32nd with Drewitt (52nd) the only other seemingly likely to qualify for the four event Finals Series.

The Finals sees the top-75 earners from the Web.com Tour join those ranked 126-200 on the PGA TOUR’s FedEx Cup list to play for a total of 50 PGA TOUR cards.

The top-25 on the Web.com standings after next week will be guaranteed a card; though can improve their exemption ranking over the four tournament series while the rest will play for the remaining 25 cards.
