After more than a month away from
competitive golf it will be a refreshed Nathan Holman who returns to action as
one of four Australians playing the European Tour’s Shenzen International in
China.
Having missed just his second cut of the
year at the True Thailand Classic in March, Holman elected to take time off but
will be keen to get back in the thick of things immediately.
Having earned his European Tour card
courtesy of his fairytale victory at the Australian PGA Championship last
December, Holman put together a run of solid golf to open 2016 with just one
missed cut in six starts.
A top-10 at the Maybank Malaysia
Championship was both a highlight and lowlight for Holman who led through 36
holes but stumbled at the weekend.
However, the 25-year-old has impressed at
every level in his career to date and it would be no surprise if he were at the
pointy end of the leader board on Sunday.
Scott Hend, Brett Rumford and Wade Ormsby
are the other three Australians in the field, Rumford also returning from a
lengthy break.
This will be the West Australian’s first
appearance since a seventh place finish at the ISPS Handa Perth International
and while it is his debut at this tournament he has had success in China in the
past.
Rumford famously won in back to back weeks
in China in 2013, taking out the Ballantines Championship and Volvo China Open
in May of that year.
While a repeat of that from might be a
lofty goal after almost two months without playing competitively, Rumford will
tee up with little in the way of expectations and a good week is not out of the
question.
For both Scott Hend and Wade Ormsby the
return to Genzon Golf Club this week will be a welcome one after both played
well at the venue last year.
Hend finished T15 in 2015 with three sub
par rounds for the week while Ormsby was a shot better and T11 after blistering
the weekend in 67-66.
Coming off one of the toughest weeks of the
year at last week’s Spanish Open at Valderrama both will be looking forward to
a less stern examination this week.
