Victorian Michael Harwood has overcome a five shot deficit at the start of the final round to claim the 2018 Australian Legends Tour Championship at Byron Bay Golf Club.
Harwood secured the win with a final round seven under par 65, for a nine under par total and a two shot win over Richard Backwell.
Heading into the back nine, Harwood found himself in the mix turning in three under and one shot off the lead being held by David Diaz and Tim Elliott. Four consecutive birdies starting at the 13th hole gave Harwood the lead which he wouldn’t relinquish over the closing holes.
“What a great three days it has been capped off with a win today. The weather has been perfect and the Byron Bay Course has once again been a real treat to play,” said Harwood.
“I played really nicely and making birdie on each of the par fives was really the key to my round today.”
This is the second time Harwood has won at Byron Bay after claiming the title on a rain soaked course back in 2010.
“It’s nice to get another win in Byron Bay. The club do such a great job with the organisation of the tournament, you just can’t fault it.”
“I have an opportunity to return to Europe this time of year to compete in Mauritius, but I choose not to go and instead play in Byron because it’s such a great event in a beautiful part of the world.”
In the race for the Ladbrokes PGA Legends Tour Order of Merit, Harwood remains in third with his victory today, $6,000 behind leader Brad Burns and $2,000 behind Tim Elliott.
Players will now make the move to the Sunshine Coast for the Noosa Legends Pro-Am on Tuesday, before the Sunshine Coast Masters tees off at Twin Waters and Pelican Waters on Wednesday.
