An equal best round of the tournament by Peter Fowler and a top-20 finish for Peter Senior were the highlights for the Australians at the year’s second over 50’s Major.
Fowler was one of three players to shoot a
5-under round at the treacherous Pete Dye course at French Lick on Friday, a
score that stood up for the entire week on a layout that proved punishing for
the stars of the Champions Tour.
After a first round 77 Fowler’s round was
even more impressive though he couldn’t keep the momentum and despite making
the cut comfortably stumbled to an 80 on Saturday to fall down the leader
board.
Finishing 10-over for the week after a
Sunday 74 Fowler was T45, five shots behind Senior whose 75-74-70-74 week saw
him finish T17.
Just five players finished under par at the
prestigious tournament which was won for the second straight year by Colin
Montgomerie.
The Scot blitzed the field with rounds of
72-69-70-69 to be 8-under for the week and four shots ahead of his nearest
competitor Esteban Toledo.
New Zealand’s Grant Waite also earned a
start at French Lick finishing 7-over for the week and T26.
