New South Wales professional Rhein Gibson has continued on with his form from the opening two rounds to claim the inaugural Meriton Gold Coast Invitational.
Gibson started the day with a one shot lead and after making birdies at his opening two holes, Gibson has established a lead that would never be headed. Gibson’s final round of 39 points for a 115 point total in the scratch stableford competition would be good enough for a three point victory over Gavin Flint, Ryan Fox and Jake Higginbottom.
Conditions proved difficult for many of the professionals throughout the week with only 11 of the 54 professionals that played breaking par. The blustery southerly’s made it paramount for player’s to keep their ball in play, but this wasn’t made easy by the ever increasing winds.
Gibson however, was able to make the most of these conditions and is looking forward to taking his form to the Isuzu Queensland Open which gets underway at the Brookwater Golf and Country Club next week. "It is great to win the inaugural Gold Coast Invitational, especially against a field that includes some of Australia’s up and coming stars," said Gibson.
"The three courses that we played this week were in great condition and really highlighted the calibre of the golf courses available for golfers to play here on the Gold Coast. I have really enjoyed my week here with my amateur partners and hopefully I can duplicate this performance next week at Brookwater."
In the ALPG division, Ashley Ona has overcome a one shot deficit in today’s final round to claim a three shot victory over Kristie Smith. Ona finished on 103 points, with Smith on 100, while Ashlee Dewhurst finished a further shot back in outright third.
The Queensland Sunshine Tour will now make way for the PGA Tour of Australasia with the Queensland Open getting under next Thursday at the Brookwater Golf and Country Club. Nick Cullen will return looking to defend his title from last year.
