Heading into this week’s Utah Championship at Oakridge Country Club no Australians sit within the top 25 moneylist ranking that secures a position on the main tour in 2019 with just five tournaments remaining before the end of the regular season.
As Cameron Davis (one spot outside the top 25) prepares to make his major championship debut at Carnoustie next week, Rhein Gibson is best positioned to make a move with a strong showing in Utah.
Currently ranked 32nd, Gibson has started his past two tournaments in a way to put himself in position for a big finish only to lose ground to the field over the course of the weekend.
Jamie Arnold (ranked 57th) is in one of the first groups away with Brett Drewitt (46th) and Kiwis Steven Alker (98th) and Tim Wilkinson (80th) needing to finish near the very top to bolster their chances of a 2019 PGA Tour card.
The Mackenzie Tour resumes in Canada this week with Brett Coletta, Theodore Coroneo and Ruben Sondjaja the three Australians teeing it up in the Staal Foundation Open while there is a big contingent taking part in the Yantai Championship on the PGA Tour China.
To be played at the spectacular Ian Woosnam-designed course at Yantai Nanshan Mashanzai Golf Club, the Yantai Championship boasts a total of 16 Australasians in the field led by South Australian Max McCardle, currently 16th on the Order of Merit.
Playing in just his third PGA Tour China event of the year Deyen Lawson will be out to improve on his OOM position of 33rd with Kevin Yuan, James Marchesani and Corey Hale all sitting just outside the top 50.
