Rhein Gibson has rocketed into the lead at the Emirates
Australian Open once again proving his capacity to go low.
Playing in the morning, Gibson took advantage of the calm
condition to fire 6-under 66 to be leading the Emirates Australian Open after
the morning field of round two.
"My game’s
been rounding into good form. I played
well last week at the New South Wales Open," said Gibson, who finished tied 4th
at Stonecutters Ridge.
"I knew you just have to take advantage of the morning
rounds out here. The greens are soft,
the wind laid down.
"You know you have to get after it because making pars
isn’t going to get you anywhere."
Gibson is enjoying being home and in contention after
spending the year competing on the PGA TOUR.
"It was my first year on the PGA Tour. I didn’t
really have my game the first half of the year; I kind of re-ranked all the way
down and struggled to get into tournaments," added Gibson.
"I had a really strong back half of the year. I almost got my card back through the Web.com
Tour playing seven tournaments.
Last year Gibson finished tied 8th but in 2013,
the last time the Emirates Australian Open was played at Royal Sydney, he
finished 4th.
"The only other time I have played here was three
years ago in the Australian Open, I think I finished fourth that year and got
in the British Open.
"I love the Australian, I love
Royal Sydney. It would be awesome to knock off my home Open.
"Once again I’m
in contention come the weekend, so hopefully I can be there really late Sunday
this year.
The other player who raced up the leaderboard, to the
delight of fans was Adam Scott.
He fired 7-under 65 to post the best round of the
morning and move into contention heading into the weekend.
"It was a good second nine holes really and I finally
just got a bit of rhythm happening out there and a bit of momentum, a few putts
went in and a few better shots," said Scott.
"I’m not even going to say I’ve got a sour taste in my mouth after 65. I’m very happy with 65, but I
can always do better.
"I feel like I wasted three or
four short ones over two days. That’s annoying because they count just the same as all the
good shots and everything, so it is a little frustrating but I’m trying not to let it bother
me too much," explained Scott.
"65’s a good score, and I’d say my workload was a little bit light coming into
this event, so I’m not surprised it’s not 100 per cent."The afternoon field is now on course.
