Fraser finds matchplay comfort zone

With five missed cuts in his previous six events Marcus Fraser brought little in the way of form to the Saltire Energy Paul Lawrie Matchplay in Germany but found his mojo in the head to head format.

With five missed cuts in his previous six events Marcus Fraser brought little in the way of form to the Saltire Energy Paul Lawrie Matchplay in Germany but found his mojo in the head to head format.

""A former pennant player at Peninsula-Kingswood in Melbourne, Fraser produced some stunning golf on his way to the round of 16 at the Bad Griesbach Resort.

He accounted for France’s Gregory Bourdy 2&1 in the opening round and faced one of the local favourites, Maximillian Kieffer, in the round of 32.

After taking an early lead in that encounter Fraser fell three down through 10 holes before staging a stunning comeback.

He squared the match with three straight birdies from the 11th then went 2up with two to play after consecutive birdies at 15 and 16.

The 17th was halved in birdies to see Fraser take one of the best matches of the week and book a round of 16 encounter with in form Swede Johan Carlsson.

Fraser held on gamely against the 30-year-old who produced four birdies in the first 10 holes and was just one down after a birdie at 11 and still well in the match.

Halved holes at 12 and 13 promised a close finish but Carlsson reeled off three straight birdies from the 14th to end Fraser’s week, the top 10 finish just the second of the year for the likeable Victorian.

Nathan Holman was the only other Australian to make the trip to Germany but his disappointing run continued with a 6&5 loss to Ireland’s Paul Dunne.
