On the back of his runner-up finish at the Irish Open a week ago New Zealand’s Ryan Fox has further emphasised his credentials on links courses with another top-10 result at the Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open at the Gullane Golf Club.
Fox and Queenslander Scott Hend started the final round in a tie for second and right in contention but were run down by a record-setting round of 10-under 60 from South African Brandon Stone, his third European Tour victory.
Fox began the final round on the right note with a birdie at the second hole but dropped shots at the fifth and 15th holes to record a 2-under par 68 and finish in a tie for sixth at 14-under, moving the 31-year-old inside the top 10 in the Race to Dubai rankings.
Like Fox, Hend roared into contention with a round of 63 on Saturday but couldn’t maintain that momentum over the closing 18 holes, making the solitary bogey on the front nine and then two birdies and a bogey at 17 for an even-par round of 70 to finish tied 14th.
Cameron Smith was under par in all four rounds as he prepared for this week’s Open Championship at Carnoustie with a T42 finish at 7-under par, Adam Bland (66th) the only other Australian to qualify for the weekend.
On the European Challenge Tour Nick Cullen saved his best round of the week until last, firing a 6-under par round of 65 to finish the Italian Challenge at 11-under and in a tie for 13th, equal with Queensland’s Jack Munro.
Munro’s Sunday looked like it might be something spectacular when he made eagle at the par-5 first and followed it up with birdies at the fourth and sixth holes. However a dropped shot at the ninth hole and further bogeys at the 13th and 18th holes saw him sign for a 3-under par round of 68.
The best placed Aussie on the Challenge Tour moneylist, Dimitrios Papadatos, had a Sunday he’d rather forget, a quadruple bogey eight on the par-4 13th hole contributing to a 4-over round of 75.
