After missing the cut on debut in 2017 Ryan Fox has produced three sub-par rounds in taking top Australasian honours at the European Tour’s flagship event at Wentworth in England.
Fox made the cut on the number at the BMW PGA Championship but climbed several places in the field with weekend rounds of 71-71 to eventually finish T43.
The New Zealand native was one of 10 Australasians to tee up in the first of the lucrative Rolex Series events for 2018 but only he and Andrew Dodt qualified for the weekend.
Dodt, who had a close call at this event when he led into the final round last year, wasn’t quite as sharp in 2018 though a final round 68 was a good note to finish on as he moved up eight places Sunday to T51.
Four double bogeys over the course of the week were costly for Dodt who otherwise played decent golf, 14 birdies and an eagle over the four days suggesting his game is in good shape ahead of a series of big events.
For Fox the week was a revenge of sorts after he teed up in 2017 with high expectations only to stumble with rounds of 74-76.
He was much more steady this time around and after opening with a 2-under 70 maintained his composure all week and with 17 birdies and an eagle on over the four days showed he has the firepower to contend.
It was a disappointing result for the remainder of the Australians in the field, Brett Rumford missing the 1-under cut line by two shots while Scott Hend, Marcus Fraser and Adam Bland were all a shot further back.
Jason Scrivener’s opening 75 proved too much to overcome as he finished three shots the wrong side of the cut, Sam Brazel Jason Norris and Wade Ormsby all well outside the number at 6-over for the 36 holes.
