NSW Open winner Ben Eccles has produced some sterling golf at the Sunshine Tour’s Dimension Data Pro-Am in South Africa, including a near course record in the second round.
Eccles reeled off an incredible eight birdies in nine holes at The Links at Fancourt on Friday on his way a to 9-under 64 that would have matched the course record had lift clean and place rules not been in play.
It was one of two rounds of 64 for the first year Professional in the tournament which is based on the popular Pebble Beach Pro-Am in America.
His Friday round came at the Links at Fancourt, which has a par of 73, while the second came in the final round at the Montagu course for an 8-under result.
Eccles’ amazing second round began mundanely enough after he made the turn 1-under with two birdies and one bogey on his card. But that was no indication of the fireworks to come.
After a birdie-par start to the back nine, the 21-year-old caught fire, peeling off seven consecutive birdies to finish his round and jump into contention.
"I’ve been hitting the ball really well. Today everything just went really well," he told the Sunshine Tour after signing his card.
"I finished with seven birdies in a row and you know I’m pretty thrilled about it."
After an opening round of 70 the brilliant score put Eccles well in contention heading to the weekend but a momentum killing 77 the following day put victory beyond reach.
However, showing plenty of resilience, Eccles put the disappointment of that score behind him and again scorched the course in the final round with a nine birdie/one bogey 64 to push his way into an impressive top-10 finish.
Eccles was one of three Australians to tee up in the event, Daniel Gaunt and Lincoln Tighe also securing starts.
Gaunt was consistent over the four days with rounds of 70-69-69-71 to finish 10-under for the week and T22 while Tighe missed the third round cut.
