Docking extends Hamilton Island lead

An opening bogey couldn’t halt Matthew Docking’s charge for back-to-back PGA Professionals Championships, taking a two shot lead over Steven Myers heading into tomorrow’s final round.

""Docking fired a second consecutive round of 69 in today’s second round to sit at 4- under par and although he has extended his overnight lead, he knows there is still plenty of work ahead of him tomorrow.

"I was in the chasing pack in the final round last year, so rather than be the hunter I will be the one being hunted," said Docking.

"Today was all about limiting my mistakes and apart from a couple late in my round, I pretty much achieved what I set out to do."

"There will no doubt be a few nerves tomorrow morning before I tee off, but I feel I have now played enough competitive golf to keep these in check. I know if I stay patient and continue to have fun the result will take care of itself."

Professionals close to Docking will be looking to bridge the margin early, as they try to put the pressure back on him in tomorrow’s final round, including Myers.

"Two shots is not a huge margin playing at any course, let alone playing here at Hamilton Island," said Myers.

"Although the course is demanding, I am really looking forward to the challenge, and no matter what the outcome it’s just great to have had the opportunity to play golf in paradise."

As PGA Professionals prepare for tomorrow’s final round, the final round of the Hamilton Island Amateur Golf Championship came to a climatic end, with John Woolcock overcoming a six shot deficit, with only three holes to play, to claim victory by one shot.

Woolcock finished with 73 points, one shot ahead of Matt Edwards and John Clarke. Clarke will no doubt want to forget his finish, managing only two points over his closing three holes to lose by one.

While the men battled it out over the closing holes, the women were having an even tighter fight with Petrea Edwards edging out Rosey Birrell on a count-back. Both ladies finished on 67 points, but it would Petrea’s second round 37, that would prove to be the difference.

Tomorrow’s final round begins at 7:45am with the lead group of Vernon Sexton-Finck, Steven Myers and Matthew Docking teeing off at 9:05am.
