The World Number 8 sits in a tie for sixth following round 1, after carding a 5-under-par 65 which included seven birdies. Fellow Aussie Geoff Ogvily recorded a ace on the par-three fourth on his way to a opening round 1-under par 69.
Englishman Paul Casey and American Webb Simpson share the lead at 8-under, one shot clear of Columbian Camilo Villegas and American Robert Streb. South African Rory Sabbatini sits alone at 6-under while a string of players are on 5-under including Day.
It has been a promising start to 2015 for the 27 year old after his T3 at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions which saw Day equal the course record in the final round with a 62, which included 11 birdies across the final 14 holes.
The first full field event of 2015 on the PGA Tour see’s nine Aussies competing. Joining Day are Geoff Ogilvy, Matt Jones, Steven Bowditch and John Senden, all backing up after playing last week at Kapalua Resort, with Cameron Percy, Stuart Appleby, Robert Allenby and Marc Leishman all in their first event of the year.
Round 2 gets underway at 7am local time – 4am Saturday morning in Australia (AEDT).
