With the end of the FedEx Cup now in plain sight Jason Day will be the focus not only of Australian fans but golf followers around the world as he strives to become the first player from this part of the world to claim the US$10 million bonus pool.
A brilliant four win season, including his
first major championship, sees the 27-year-old at the top of the FedEx Cup
standings with just two events to go.
A fifth win at this week’s BMW Championship
in Chicago would all but ensure victory and cap off one of the greatest seasons
by an Australian born player on the world’s richest circuit.
Day is one of three Australians in the
field of 70 who will tee up at Conway Farms Golf Club this week, Steven
Bowditch and Matt Jones also surviving the first two play-off events.
At 22nd in the standings
Bowditch is a good chance of playing next week’s final event in Atlanta while
Jones, at 33rd, has work to do to climb inside the top-30.
Both Jones and Day have good memories to
draw on at this week’s event, Jones posting a T8 result last time the
tournament was at this venue in 2013 and Day finishing T4.
Bowditch’s only appearance at the
tournament came last year when it was played in Colorado, the Queenslander an
unknown quantity at this venue.
Day will again play at least the first two
rounds in the company of World Number One Jordan Spieth as the pair continues
to hold the top-two spots on the points table.
They will be joined by third placed Rickie
Fowler to form the marquee group of the first two rounds and share the bulk of
the media and fan attention.
Jones and Bowditch will have less focus
initially, Bowditch paired with Sangmoon Bae and Paul Casey while Jones plays
with David Lingmerth and Harris English.
This week’s field of 70 will be reduced to
30 for next week’s grand finale to the FedEx Cup, the TOUR Championship at East
Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.
According to projections on the PGA TOUR
website Bowditch would climb to third on the points list with a win this week
and needs to finish 38th or better to ensure a spot at East Lake
while Matt Jones would move to sixth with a win and needs to finish 7th
or better this week to advance to Atlanta.
