Jason Day and Adam Scott will be pushing each other along as the year long race for the FedEx Cup reaches its conclusion this week.

Sitting third and fourth on the points list, the Queenslanders have been paired together for the opening round at East Lake Golf Club as each tries to become the first Australian to win the title.

Pairings for the first round have been done in order of where the 30 eligible players sit on the points table; Scott and Day head out in the second last group on Thursday.

Both Australians are among the favourites to win the Cup, those players in the top-5 heading into this week having a big advantage on the rest of the field.

If any of the top-5 win in Atlanta they are guaranteed to win the Cup and its $10 million bonus pool.

Day comes into the week with some questions over his health after withdrawing from the BMW Championship a fortnight ago with a slight back injury.

The World Number 1 felt a twinge when he bent to put his tee in the ground on the ninth hole of the final round and immediately withdrew as a precautionary measure.

However, the 28-year-old has said in the lead up to this week he is ‘cautiously optimistic’ about his chances.

The back injury was diagnosed as a pinched joint capsule, an ongoing issue which flared up earlier in the year on his way to victory at the WGC Matchplay tournament.

At fourth on the standings, Day can finish as low as third at East Lake and still mathematically win the FedEx Cup.

There are no such issues for Scott who has been the most consistent player in the play-offs so far.

In the first three events Scott finished T4, outright fourth and T4 and if he was to repeat that this week would still have a mathematical chance to win the Cup.

However, the 2013 Masters champion will be aiming higher than that as a former winner of this event and one of the most consistent performers on this course in the past decade.

Scott lifted the TOUR Championship trophy in 2006, the year before the introduction of the FedEx Cup, and his scoring at the course is among the best in the field.

Five times he has shot 65 in his nine appearances and his stroke average of 69.61 is second only to Phil Mickelson among those playing this week.

Day and Scott are the only two Australians to have qualified for the season finale in 2016, the pair enjoying brilliant PGA TOUR seasons.

Scott has won twice and has eight top 10’s in his 19 starts while Day has three wins and 10 top 10’s over the same period.
