Jason Day’s whirlwind finish to 2015 has one last piece of history resting on the outcome of this week’s TOUR Championship: the coveted Player of the Year title.
Voted by the players themselves it would be
a remarkable achievement if Day were to capture the crown after Jordan Spieth
was considered unbeatable as recently as three weeks ago.
With his lifelong dream of becoming the
world’s Number 1 ranked golfer realised last week, Day tees up in Atlanta not
only the favourite to win but, ironically, with almost no pressure to do so.
Usually the Player of the Year vote
attracts little attention but so compelling have been the seasons of both Day
and Spieth that this year is sure to spark plenty of debate.
With two majors, top-4 finishes in the
other two Grand Slam events and two other Tour titles to his name Spieth was
considered unbeatable for the honour before Day began his incredible end of
season run.
The Queenslander has put himself in the
conversation thanks to winning four of his last six tournaments, including a
major, and being the man most likely to claim the year long FedEx Cup title
this week.
If he wins in Atlanta, Day will surely have
a chance to join Greg Norman’s 1995 effort as the only Australians to be
recognised by their peers as the best in the game over the course of a season.
Given his recent form past results are
little indication of Day’s chances this week but with a T4 and T6 among his
four appearances at East Lake there is no question he has a liking for the venue.
While Day will have the focus of the golf
world squarely on him fellow Queenslander Steven Bowditch will be teeing up for
his first TOUR Championship with a sense of satisfaction.
While at 24th in the standings
he’s unlikely to win the FedEx Cup, a good performance in the season’s grand
finale will give him confidence heading to next month’s Presidents Cup.
Bowditch has had his best season as a
Professional and can savour his week in Atlanta, regardless of the outcome,
knowing his game has climbed to another level.
