Jason Day and Matt Jones have the Aussie flag flying high on the PGA Championship leaderboard after their first rounds at Whistling Straits.
The Aussie pair each fired rounds of 4-under 68 to be two
shots behind first round leader Dustin Johnson.
Day made his PGA Championship debut at Whistling Straits
back in 2010 where he finished tied 10th, since then his performance
in the Majors has been exceptional with eight top-10 finishes in 18
appearances.
Maintaining his reputation as a Major performer, Day held on
through a quiet start to eventually post his 4-under the card which was
highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 2nd.
"The biggest thing is just to be really
patient with myself and know that there’s four par-5s out here that you can
really attack and take advantage of," said Day, who played the par-5’s in 4-under
today.
"Getting through the front nine
with 2-under and then eagling the second hole was really nice to do."
"I was really trying to think,
okay, if I can get 68 or better that would be a good start, considering the
wind."
Also happy with his round was
Matt Jones who got off to a flying start. The New South Welshman was 4-under in
his opening seven holes before a bogey at the 9th put a halt to the
run.
Jones was able to get that
dropped shot back at the par-4 13th and then par his way home and
into a favourable position on the leaderboard.
"Number 9 is just a tough hole,
especially with the wind off to the left. There’s nowhere to miss that green.
If you miss it — I just couldn’t get up and down," said Jones of the only blemish
on his scorecard.
"Anytime you start off with a
good round, especially in a Major Championship, it’s great. There’s not going
to be a lot of great scores this afternoon."
"I see Dustin at 6, I’m at 4. If anyone else
shoots 4-under this afternoon, they’ve played a hell of a round."
Also playing in the morning field but not faring as well was
Geoff Ogilvy who had a 2-over 74 to be T71.
Jones prediction was correct with scoring much harder for
the Aussies playing in the afternoon field.
John Senden performed the best of the Australians in the
afternoon wave who were faced with challenging wind conditions which made birdies
hard to come by at Whistling Straits. He finished on 1-under the card and is
T24.
Queenslanders Steven Bowditch and Cameron Smith, who is
making his PGA Championship debut, each fired rounds 2-over 74 to be T71 on the
leaderboard.
Club Professional Brett Jones, who is the brother of Matt
Jones, fired a respectable 3-over the card.
Adam Scott is a further two shots back after an
uncharacteristic roller coaster round which featured five birdies, four bogeys,
a double bogey and a triple bogey.
Marc Leishman rounds out the Aussie contingent on 7-over the
card.
