Australia’s Jason Day is officially the Number 1 golfer in the world following his win at the BMW Championship.

It was a momentous occasion for Day, who has dreamed of achieving the number one position since childhood and a lofty goal that he has often discussed.

"My main goal was to get to Number 1 and we understood you have to win consistently to get to that Number 1 spot, to be able to have the opportunity to get to Number 1 and win is fantastic," said Day.

"Yesterday and today were probably the toughest rounds I have ever had to play in my life, just knowing that I had the opportunity to get to Number 1."

"Stepping up and playing the way I did today was great, just too really understand what I have put into my game to get to where I am today."

It’s been a fairy tale year for Day, who has been in dominant form this year in his quest for World Number 1; highlighted by his first Major victory at the PGA Championship and topped off with his six shot win in this week’s FedEx Cup Finals event, the BMW Championship as well as his nomination for The Don Award.

"I have just been working so hard, all I want to do is win and that has been the mentality since The Open Championship," added Day.

"Something changed in my head and I felt like it was my time to start winning tournaments and ever since then it’s been a phenomenal run."

For all sports fans around Australia, today will go down in history.

Jason Day becomes the 19th Professional in the history of the Official World Golf Rankings to hold the top spot and just the third Australian after Adam Scott’s rise in May 2014 for 11 weeks which ended

Tiger Woods’ 60 week reign and prior to this Greg Norman, who held the position for 331 weeks during the 1980s and 1990s.

Day becomes the first player during the FedExCup era to win The Barclays and BMW Championship in the same season.
