Hailing from Ardglass, a coastal fishing village in Northern Ireland, 23-year-old Cormac Sharvin made a fabulous start to his first European Tour event in Perth yesterday.
Playing in the ISPS HANDA PerthInternational on a European Tour invite Sharvin posted an opening round of 68,only three shots off the leader Peter Uihlein and tied for sixth place.
"Yeah I played really nicely apart from one hole so I’m really happy on my European Tour debut to start with a 68," Sharvin said.
"I started off pretty solidly with a birdie and was able to continue that form for a good portion of the round, I chipped in on 10 which was probably the highlight of the round for me," he continued.
Sharvin is playing only his second tournament as a Professional making his Pro debut at the Oates VicOpen where he failed to make the cut, but his attitude..
"To be honest I was actually playing okay (at the Oates Vic Open), that was my first tournament since September because I hadn’t finished studying yet, so my last tournament before then was Walker Cup so I hadn’t played a tournament in 3 or 4 months soI wasn’t really expecting anything," Sharvin said.
"I didn’t know what to expect but obviously there were a lot of emotions going on being my first pro event. You don’t know what to expect really and it just didn’t go the way I planned, but I knew if I was just patient it would come so today it finally came thankfully," he added.
Taking a week off between tournaments to settle himself Sharvin has had time to prepare for the Perth International –and to see some of Australia.
"I’d never been toAustralia before and I knew the weather was good but I love it, if golf didn’t work out I would definitely think about moving here," Sharvin said. "But lets hope I don’t have to think about that," he laughed.
From Perth Sharvin will be preparing to play the Challenge Tour in May and says this tournament isa great build in to the next phase in his career.
"It’s nice to get around under my belt. At this point in time it’s all about getting the experience. This being my first European Tour event I think I dealt with it really well. You’re going to feel different emotions that you wouldn’t have felt as an amateur golfer so I think that’s the main thing for me," Sharvin said.
Sharvin’s second round tees off with Daniel Nisbet (AUS) and Borja Virto Astudillo (ESP) at 12:30pm AWST today.
