Marcus Fraser and Jason Scrivener have raced to the finish line at the inaugural Rocco Forte Open in Italy, both firing Sunday rounds of 67 to storm into the top-5.
It was a welcome return to form for Fraser who made his first start since March and opened with back to back rounds of 66 to head to the weekend in a share of ninth position.
However, high winds Saturday saw the field struggle and Fraser faltered with a 74 to slip nine places down the leaderboard and nine shots off the pace.
But with good weather Sunday Fraser took advantage and while disappointed with a bogey at the 17th it was his only blemish among five birdies and was good enough for his best finish on Tour since winning in Malaysia more than a year ago.
Scrivener, too, found the Verdura Golf Club to his liking and played steady golf all week to post his third top-10 since the season began late last year.
The key to his week was an even par round of 71 Saturday as the field struggled in difficult conditions.
That was good enough to move him 12 places up the standings on a day when only seven players broke par and only one broke 70.
His Sunday 67 was the icing on the cake and he will head to the Tour’s flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, with plenty of confidence.
Fraser and Scrivener were part of a seven strong Australasian challenge, five of those making the cut.
Wade Ormsby matched Fraser’s scores the opening two rounds but was among those battered by the conditions Saturday with a 76.
That dropped him to 30th and he struggled to recover Sunday, a 2-over 73 seeing him finish T38.
Andrew Dodt finished on the same total while Nick Cullen also struggled at the weekend with rounds of 74-75 to finish 1-over for the week and T68.
New Zealand’s Ryan Fox and Western Australia’s Daniel Fox both missed the cut.
