Amateur ties Professional at QLD Open

Queensland amateur Kade McBride and Victorian Professional Anthony Brown are tied for the lead after two rounds of the Isuzu QLD Open being played at the Brookwater Golf and Country Club.

Queensland amateur Kade McBride and Victorian Professional Anthony Brown are tied for the lead after two rounds of the Isuzu QLD Open being played at the Brookwater Golf and Country Club.

Starting the day with a one shot lead, Brown struggled to negotiate the challenging lay out despite the improved weather conditions.

Shooting a 1-over 73 today to be 6-under after two rounds, Brown watched on as the afternoon field failed to overtake him.

"It is hard to back up after a really good round,” said Brown.

"You have to start all over again. In reality you don’t go out and expect to repeat a similar score."

"You have to remain patient and not start pushing for birdies. I didn’t get ahead of myself and was pleased with that.”

Starting on the 10th hole, amateur Kade McBride spent most of his round at 1-over the card but staying patient he found a late birdie, on the par-5 8th to shoot an even par 72.

"I stayed really level headed out there. My ball striking wasn’t as good as yesterday but overall I am really happy," said McBride.

"I felt like I was still playing well with my wedges so I was trying to attack but I wasn’t holing putts. Judging the pace on the greens was my killer today."

But even par is enough to see him tied for the lead with Brown heading into the weekend where he is aiming to claim the title.

"I am out here playing golf with some of the best players in Australia, its fun and a good experience; I am watching and learning from them," added McBride.

"I want to win just as bad as anyone out here and if I can then I will be pretty happy about that."

If McBride does manage the feat he will be the first amateur to claim the Queensland Open title since Stuart Appleby in 1991.

New South Welshman Jake Higginbottom is in excellent form coming off a runner-up finish at the Fiji International. He fired a 5-under 67 to be outright third.

Rounding out the top-5 on 4-under the card is South Australian Tom Bond and New Zealand’s Peter Lee.

The round of the day belonged to South Australian Max McCardle, who needing a birdie on the last to set a new course record, posted his first bogey of the day to finish at 6-under the card and tied sixth.

Michael Wright produced the other highlight of the round acing the 170 metre par-3 16th hole using his 6-iron. For his efforts Wright picks up $10,000 thanks to SBP Australia.

The second round cut was made at 6-over the card with 56 Professionals and nine amateurs making it to the weekend rounds.

The third round tees off at 9am with the leaders on course at 11am.
