AFL star to tee up in the Vic PGA

Essendon Midfielder Brendon Goddard will step onto turf of a different kind tomorrow when he tees up in the Victorian PGA Championship.

Goddard’s love for golf is well documented and features prominently on his twitter and instagram accounts.

Over the year’s Goddard has been spotted at many PGA Tour of Australasia events and even caddied for Andrew Tampion at last year’s Talisker Masters.

But tomorrow’s challenge will be unique for Goddard as he will play alongside the Tour Professionals in full tournament conditions for the first round of the Victorian PGA Championship.

Being played at the Heritage Golf and Country Club, the tournament is being played in a pro-am format for the first two rounds.

Teeing off at 7.55am Goddard will play, as an amateur, alongside Kurt Barnes who has amassed five victories around the world.

Also in his group is Victorian Professional Jack Wilson who last year made headlines as the first PGA Trainee to win a PGA Tour of Australasia tournament and finished third at the Australian PGA Championship behind Adam Scott and Rickie Fowler.

A handy golfer himself Goddard plays off a scratch handicap.

PGA Professional Stuart Leong, who has provided instruction to Goddard in the past, says he has the game to hold his own on course.

"Brendon is obviously a very fit, strong athlete, his ability to hit the ball, his distance and quality of swing will stand up really well," said Leong who coaches a number of Tour Professionals.

"Obviously the area where the Tour Professionals will be stronger is being match ready for golf especially in tournament conditions, they are playing under that pressure every day."

"It will be interesting to see if Brendon can transfer his competitive skills from the footy arena to golf."

"He is definitely hell of a player, he can hit a shot as good, if not better than some of the Tour Professionals but it’s whether he can do it in the heat of the battle."
