Despite an injury disrupted season and losing his caddy and coach for the final event of the year Jason Day has finished top Australian in the season long FedEx Cup competition on the PGA TOUR.
With a T4 finish at the TOUR Championship Day remained in 10th place overall on the yearlong FedEx Cup points list and will earn $500,000 for that result on top of the $343,333 he earns for his top-5 finish at East Lake.
Adam Scott was next best of the Australians both in the FedEx Cup competition and the TOUR Championship.
He finished 12th in the FedEx Cup ($290,000) and T9 at east Lake ($231,667).
John Senden finished the year 23rd in the FedEx Cup ($210,000) and 26th at East Lake ($138,000) while Geoff Ogilvy, the last Australian in the 29 man TOUR Championship, finished 29th in the FedEx Cup ($180,000) and 29th at East Lake ($132,000).
While his T4 finish is a good result Day will be a little disappointed not to have been closer at the business end of the tournament after sharing the lead at one stage late in the second round.
After being forced to withdraw from last week’s BMW Championship with back problems Day was fit enough to take his place in the field but his caddie and coach Col Swatton had to give up the bag after injuring his back through seven holes of the first round.
With mental coach Jason Goldsmith taking over looping duties Day’s continuously disrupted 2014 and it was an achievement to finish as high as he did.
For Scott it was another week of what might have been with a Saturday 65 the highlight of an otherwise mostly lacklustre performance.
As he has done all playoff series Scott was always near the top of the leader board though never a genuine threat and will now take a long break before the Australian summer.
Neither Senden nor Ogilvy ever really got going for the week, Ogilvy in particular showing the fatigue of a busy end to the year with rounds of 77-77-73-73.
