Canberra based professional Matthew Millar has upstaged his rivals to claim the inaugural Southern Great Barrier Reef Port Curtis Golf Classic, with a final round 65 at the Calliope Country Club.

Millar cruised
to a five shot victory over his nearest competitors Damien Jordan and Blake
McGrory, after finishing at 16 -under the card, with neither Jordan or McGrory
mounting a charge at Millar throughout the final round.

The first
round of this unique tournament teed off on Monday at the Gladstone Golf Club,
and although Ed Stedman found himself in the lead at 7-under the card, Millar
was insight of Stedman and just one shot back.

However
Millar made his move at Boyne Island yesterday, firing a 3-under par round in
difficult conditions to gain the outright lead by a single shot from both
Jordan and McGrory heading into the final round at Calliope.

There is no
doubt Millar has been in hot form and it continued today, closing with an impressive
7-under par 65 to claim his second win on the Sunshine Swing of the Choice
Hotels PGA Pro-Am Series this year.

"I played
really solid over the past three days, making the most of the opportunities I
gave myself throughout the week," said Millar.

"It has been
a great three day’s for me and although it wasn’t easy having to play on a
different course each day, it was made easier by the fact that each course
suited by game."

"The clubs
and tournament officials should be very proud of what they achieved in their
inaugural tournament and I look forward to returning to defend my title next
year."

Although the
day belonged to Millar, Blake McGrory recorded an albatross, after his
perfectly executed second shot with a six iron found the bottom of the cup at
the 458 metre par-5 14^th.

McGrory
didn’t actually see his ball disappear into the cup for the rare bird, but his
playing partners certainly made him aware of his exceptional feat.          

Professionals
will continue their drive down the east coast of Queensland with the $19,000
Maryborough Pro-Am teeing off on Thursday.

Local product
Sam Eaves will be looking to defend his title from last year, as he looks to
become the first back-to-back champion in the 31 year history of the tournament.
