With cards for 2016 and places in the lucrative FedEx Cup playoffs on the line the seven strong Australian contingent at the PGA TOUR’s final full field event of the season has plenty to play for at this week’s Wyndham Championship.
Leading the charge will be Australia’s second highest ranked player, Adam Scott, whose disappointing PGA campaign was reflective of much of his golf this year and forced the World Number 11 to commit to this week’s event for the first time since 2009.
At 91st in the FedEx Cup standings Scott is not guaranteed to make it past the first playoff event next week but could turn around a less than stellar year with a big finish starting this week.
While it is a matter of pride for Scott to earn his way to the year’s final event, the TOUR Championship for the leading 30 players, the rest of the Australians teeing up this week have a bigger prizer to play for.
For PGA TOUR regulars Cameron Percy, Aaron Baddeley, Greg Chalmers and Robert Allenby this is their last chance to guarantee playing privileges for next year and avoid the upcoming four tournament qualifying series.
All four sit outside the top 125 who will automatically keep their cards, Percy and Baddeley at 154 and 152 respectively while Chalmers (172) and Allenby (183) are further back.
Allenby has a career money list exemption to fall back on should his bid come up short but for the rest it is a case of now or never.
Scott Gardiner is also in this week’s field playing his last eligible tournament on a medical extension despite not having played competitively for several months.
History hasn’t always been kind to this group of Australian players at Sedgefield Country Club where the Wyndham has been played since 2009.
Adam Scott missed the cut in his only appearance that year, Cameron Percy has missed the cut in two of his three appearances here, Robert Allenby is yet to play a weekend in three tries, Greg Chalmers has a best of T32 and Aaron Baddeley has also made just one cut in three attempts.
However, with plenty of incentive to play well, and inspiration from Jason Day’s outstanding win at Whistling Straits at the weekend, there is hope for some good results this week.
