Jason Day will have a restless night’s sleep ahead of him as he sits on the precipice of recording the elusive and magical score of 59 at the BMW Championship.
Day grabbed the golfing world’s attention yet again today
with his incredible first round performance at the BMW Championship.
Playing in the marquee group of the day, alongside Jordan
Spieth and Rickie Fowler, Day lit up the par-71 Conway Farms layout.
Starting his round on the 10th, Day came through
the turn at 4-under the card with five birdies and just a lone bogey on his scorecard.
On the front nine his game ignited with an eagle at the
first followed by back-to-back birdies.
He then hit his tee shot on the 9th hole, his
last of the day, sitting on 10-under the card. Coming to rest 44 yards from the
green in the intermediate rough, Day heard the siren sound calling an end to
the days play due to inclement weather.
Day wasn’t aware that he was on 59 watch until his playing
partner, Spieth pointed it out to him on the 9th, a chip in tomorrow
morning when play resumes at 7.30am local time ensure he joins Stuart Appleby
in the history books.
"Jordan told me that it was
par-71 on 9. I probably should have known that because there’s three par-5s,
but I wasn’t paying attention. I didn’t think I’d have an opportunity of
shooting 59. He was keeping count for me," said Day.
"As we’re walking up after the
horn blew, (Jordan) said that I was going to hole out, and I said back to him,
now I’m not going to do it because you said that."
"Obviously I want to hole it. I wasn’t really thinking about
shooting 59. I obviously have an opportunity tomorrow to do it, so that’s
pretty neat."
Potentially being unaware of
the 59 number looming worked to Day’s advantage today as he believes he plays
his best golf when his mind is free of a number target.
"I’ve never shot double digits
under par before in my life until Hyundai earlier this year. I’ve always got to
it or around that number and then kind of self-sabotaged myself because I felt
uncomfortable," added Day.
"Right now I’m playing good
golf, I’m not trying to think about it because the moment that I start
attaching myself to a number, I start thinking about the outcome instead of
just trying to get out there and try and rip my driver as far as possible down
the fairway."
No matter what happens tomorrow
morning, if Day pars, birdies or eagles the 9th this has still been
an outstanding round which has set him up nicely at the BMW Championship.
"I feel like this is one of the
best rounds I’ve ever played, especially with how the wind is. The wind is tough
out there because it can be blowing 25 miles at one point and then it’ll stop
and go down to 15," added Day who is keen to continue attacking the golf course.
"The big thing with this golf
course is that if you let your foot off the pedal a little bit, even though it
is tough conditions, the guys can catch up quickly."
"I’m trying to just really get
as many birdies as I can and just keep going because I don’t want to stop. I’m
enjoying it so much that I wish I could play another 18 holes today, but
obviously we’ve got to come back tomorrow morning at 7:30," added Day.
"It’s going to be fun. These
next few days are going to be exciting."
