The TX Civil & Logistics WA PGA Championship teed off this morning in perfect conditions and players quickly took advantage to shoot low numbers.
It was a matter of picking up where he left off for R.J. Caracella who last year had to withdraw from the WA PGA Championship after 14 holes, when he was leading.
But there were no such issues for Caracella today who posted a course record equalling round of 7-under 65.
"I played here last year and I think I was leading after 13 holes but had to pull out after 14 because I tweaked my back unfortunately," said Caracella.
"I will definitely take 7-under today. I missed a few opportunities early but I just played solid golf all day. I didn’t do anything stupid like I sometimes do, just held it together."
"It’s a good golf course, it’s not short so it favours the ball striker and I like to think I’m a good ball striker."
Not alone at the top of the leaderboard for long, Queenslander Daniel Nisbet soon joined Caracella in the clubhouse also adding his name to the course record list.
"I didn’t know it was a course record until after I was finished so I am very happy. I holed a good putt on the last for birdie, so it was a bit of a bonus," said Nisbet who comes into this week off the back of a T10 finish at the Fiji International.
Nisbet attributed his on course success to the hard work he is doing off the course with his coach PGA Professional Richard Woodhouse.
"My coach and I have done a lot to make my game a little bit more consistent so hopefully the good results are more frequent," added Nisbet.
"We have set some goals and the first one was for me to understand the dynamics of a golf swing not just rely on a little bit of talent."
"Talent combined with work ethic and knowledge about the bio-mechanics of a golf swing as well as reactions to good and bad shots. There is a lot to learn and he still has a lot to teach me."
Also posting an impressive score was Antonio Murdaca, who is playing just his fifth round as a Professional.
"I felt comfortable out there, I was playing with Jarryd (Felton) so it was nice to be playing my second pro event with a mate" said Murdaca who was bogey free for his round thanks to a hot putter.
"I had 27 putts today, it wasn’t anything spectacular but I holed all my par putts and didn’t miss anything from six to 12 feet."
"I felt like I did some good stuff with the putter before this tournament, a few drills and I felt like it was rolling pretty well."
After the morning field Brett Rumford and Andrew Evans round out the top-5 at the TX Civil & Logistics WA PGA Championship on 5-under 67.
The afternoon field are now on course.
