Mike Harwood has got off to a flying start at the Coca-Cola Australian PGA Seniors Championship being played at Richmond Golf Club.
Players were treated to perfect scoring conditions in the Hawkesbury Region of New South Wales for the first round of the prestigious title and it was Harwood who capitalised.
Competing in the morning field the in form Harwood fired a 4-under 66 which featured five birdies and a lone bogey.
After his round he held a two shot lead over David Saunders and Rookie Peter O’Malley, who turning 50 this year is competing in his first Coca-Cola Australian PGA Seniors Championship.
O’Malley was 3-under the card coming through the turn but failed to fire on the back-9 yet still finds himself well within contention of winning his first E-Z-GO PGA Legends Tour title.
The perfect conditions that greeted the morning field didn’t last all day and unfortunately the afternoon field were faced with a 30 minute delay in play as a storm hit west of the area.
With the wind and rain providing a challenge for the afternoon field it was a case of the cream rising to the top as Peter Senior posted the best score of the afternoon a 3-under 67 to also be outright second and just one shot behind Harwood.
