Swede David Lingmerth arrived in Australia on the back of a breakout PGA TOUR season
David Lingmerth is an ice-cool swede on a real hot streak. He’s risen to Number 49 on the World Golf Rankings on the back of consistent performances throughout the year, highlighted by a maiden PGA TOUR title at the Memorial Tournament in June, where he shot a final-round 69 and held out Justin Rose over a three-hole playoff. At the second playoff hole he needed to get up and down from the bunker to save par and keep his hopes alive – a feat he accomplished before securing the victory at the next hole.
His other notable efforts included outright 3rd at the Quicken Loans National, T6 finishes at the Greenbrier Classic and the World Golf Championships Bridgestone Invitational, and a T12 finish at the PGA Championship in just his fourth Major appearance.
The 28-year-old’s story is not one of a prodigiously talented rookie bursting onto the international stage at a young age. Rather he’s taken time to develop, plugging away on the Web.com Tour before earning his first PGA TOUR card for the 2013 season. By the time Lingmerth had finished T2 behind Tiger Woods at the 2013 Players Championship, people were beginning to take notice.
Since then he has steadily progressed up the world rankings and earned a reputation as a solid ball striker and tough competitor. Despite his relatively small stature, Lingmerth draws power and accuracy from a simple swing that he always seems in control of.
The 2015 Australian PGA Championship marks Lingmerth’s first tournament in Australia, but he is not here for a holiday.
"I’d been thinking about coming down here the last couple of years that I’ve been on the PGA Tour but it just didn’t fit into the schedule I had planned, so I was happy that I was able to make it work this year," said Lingmerth.
"2015 has been a great season for me and I see the Australian PGA as a springboard for my 2016 season, where I will be looking to accomplish even more and hope to challenge for a spot on both the European Ryder Cup Team and Swedish Olympic Team."
