Oosthuizen breaks drought with Perth International win

South African Louis Oosthuizen has won the ISPS Handa PerthInternational firing 1-under 71 in the final round to take the win by one shotover Frenchman Alexander Levy.

"LouisIt is the first win for Oosthuizen in two years, his eighth on the European Tour and his 13thin his professional career.

"This win means a lot, it’s been two years since I had a win last, I came close a few times last year and want to stay in the winning circle, you want to keep that feeling of what it feels like to win," Oosthuizen said.

"2014 I was still struggling with a few things in my body then 15 felt okay, better than 14, but to get close is one thing to win it is something else. A victory is something you can work from and really take to the next tournament and the rest of the season," he added.

A nervous start for Oosthuizen saw him bogey the second hole before birdies on the 7thand 8th holes saw him settle into his game.

"I started really nervous this morning. I didn’t feel like I hit any bad shots but I got the wind wrong on the second and hit it two yards too far on the third and ended up going 1-over through three holes so I needed to settle in and then during the middle of the round I played nicely," Oosthuizen said.

A less than ideal green position on the 18th saw Oosthuizen finish his round with a bogey but when the putt sank it was still met with a large cheer from the watching crowd and a fist pump from the man himself.

"I left myself with a vicious putt on the last hole but I knew I had three putts. I think if I only had a one shot lead I probably would have hit it on another spot on the green with my second shot," he added.

""Oosthuizen was full of praise for the Lake Karrinyup Country Club and said his mates Ernie Ells and Ian Baker-Finch had been right when they said it would be a place he would enjoy.

"They (Ells and Baker-Finch) told me I was going to love the golf course and I do. It’s such a great track and it’s one of my favourites so I’ll definitely be coming back," Oosthuizen said.

"There were a lot of South Africans out there and a few brought me some Biltong which was nice as well. The Australian fans were a big boost as well this week," he continued.

"My PGA TOUR season is basically starting next week in Doral so it will give me a massive boost to go there and to know that I’m hitting the ball well but I am going to be a bit jetlagged I know that but you know I’m looking forwarad to the rest of the season

It’s a great tournament, my first time in Australia and I must say I think next time I will bring the whole family because I’ve had a great time in Perth and it’s a place I look forward to coming back to,"

West Australian Jason Scrivener was the highest placed Australian in the field. At one point he was tied for first with Oosthuizen before a couple of bogeys in the middle of his round saw him finish in third outright with a final score of 14-under.

"Yeah, I knew I got tied up but just 9 and 10 really killed my momentum, soft bogeys there, which is disappointing but it’s going to happen around here," Scrivener said.

"Once I made those bogeys, I kind of knew my chances were gone to win.  I just kind of tried to hold on and have a good finish."

"I think it’s just the more times you put yourself in that position, the more comfortable you get.  Hong Kong last year was a big learning curve for me and a big confidence booster, and same with this.  The more times I can do it, the better."

Thanks to his results this week, Scrivener has secured a start in the True Thailand Classic next week, a start he would not have previously had based on his category on the European Tour.

"I just got told I’ll get into Thailand in a couple weeks, which I wasn’t going to get into.  But yeah just getting off to a good start on the Money List is a big bonus."
