Damien Jordan fired a course record equalling round at the Morobe Open after the course was drenched Wednesday night with more than 100 mm of rain.
Jordan’s bogey free round of 8-under 63, matched the Lae Golf Club course record which was also held by Michael Wright and Brad Burns.
"I am really happy to find myself in the lead after today’s opening round, and it somewhat validates the hard work I have been putting in the lead up to this tournament," said Jordan.
"It is always nice to go bogey-free, so hopefully I can continue to keep the blemishes off the scorecard and keep myself in the hunt over the next three rounds."
The shot of the day belonged to New South Wales Professional Martin Dive, who executed the perfect six on the par-3 11th hole, to record a hole-in-one.
Unfortunately for Dive, 2016 is the first year the hole has not had a hole-in-one prize and therefore had to settle for the accolades from his fellow playing partners.
Round two of the Morobe Open gets underway Friday at 7:00am, with Jordan due to tee off at 7:54am.
