Six of the seven Australians who teed up in the first of the four Web.com Finals Series tournaments this week find themselves in good position in the early race for 2017 PGA TOUR cards.

Rod Pampling and Cameron Percy both finished T10 at the DAP Championship in Indiana to be inside the top-10 on the cumulative money list for the four events while Stuart Appleby finished T16.

The top-25 earners at the end of the four weeks will be awarded a card for the 2017 PGA TOUR, Brett Drewitt, Cameron Smith and Rhein Gibson all T23 on the list after a solid week in Ohio.

Reigning Australian Open champion Matt Jones was the only Australian not to feature, the Sydneysider withdrawing after an opening round 73.

Veteran Appleby set the pace for much of the week and held a share of the second round lead in the high scoring event when play teed off Saturday.

Opening rounds of 66-68 featured some vintage play from the nine time PGA TOUR winner but he found the going tougher at the weekend with score s of 71-73.

Despite slipping out of the top-5 on Sunday, Appleby will take a lot of positives from the week after being a genuine contender for the first time in almost two years.

Back surgery in early 2015 disrupted Appleby’s schedule last year and he played 2016 on a major medical extension on the PGA TOUR.

While he came up shy in his bid to earn back his card he will be encouraged by his play this week and his chances of heading back to the top circuit in 2017.

Pampling’s performance was the surprise of the week after an indifferent 2016 which saw him miss eight cuts in 18 starts on the PGA TOUR and not post a single top-10.

He looked to be continuing that pattern after an opening 74 this week but turned things around with rounds of 66-68-68 to climb into the top-10 and be on track to get back to the PGA TOUR.

Eccentric rookie Bryson DeChambeau won the DAP Championship in a four way playoff for his first professional victory.

The former US Amateur champion outlasted Andres Gonzales, Nicholas Lindheim and Julian Etulain in extra time, Lindheim and Etulain dropping out at the first extra hole.

A par the second time around was enough to seal the win for DeChambeau, who finished second behind Peter Senior at last year’s Australian Masters, and all but assure his place on the 2017 PGA TOUR.
