Adam Scott, Geoff Ogilvy and Aaron Baddeley have all made a solid start to the Shell Houston Open today sitting in T13 with round of 4-under 68.
Scott, a former winner of the event and in his first trip back to the tournament in seven years, said he’s feeling confident with how he is placed heading in to round two after handing in a blemish free card.
“There was enough good stuff out there to keep me very optimistic for about the rest of the week,” Scott said.
“I certainly would like to drive a little better. If anything, that kind of let me down, but fortunately I didn’t have to hit too many drivers today. If I can straighten that out, maybe I can get in it there a little closer. “
The Queenslander decided to add the Houston Open to his limited playing schedule in an effort to hone his skills ahead of next week’s Masters.
“I feel like I managed my game really well and I was pretty disciplined and didn’t push it out there when things weren’t going my way, which is all the things you need to do around a Major championship.
“It’s a real test to do that this week and then hopefully execute a little better tomorrow and get in it there closer and give myself some more realistic chances at birdie.”
Victorian Aaron Baddeley too had a bogey free day and said despite the heavy rain prior to round one, the greens were quite receptive to his game today.
“They weren’t slow at all, they were quick today. You didn’t have to think about getting it to the hole at all, the ball was rolling out nicely,” Baddeley said post round.
“This course is perfect, the greens are perfect. Get it on line, it’s going in.”
Geoff Ogilvy only had the one bogey today but was able to recover with five birdies, his hot group will be one to watch tomorrow with Korea’s Sung Kang sitting in outright second with 7-under 65, one shot behind Rickie Fowler who currently leads on 8-under 64.
Of the other Australian contingent, Matt Jones is T44 2-under 70, Cameron Smith is even and T86, Greg Chalmers, John Senden and Steven Bowditch are 2-over 74 while Robert Allenby (5-over) and Stuart Appleby (7-over) have a big job ahead of them tomorrow.
