Adam Scott made his move on Friday at The Masters to finish the day the leading Aussie and inside the top-10.
Needing a fast start, Scott made the turn at Augusta National at 4-under the card. It was tougher on the back-9 however the Queenslander fought to post a 3-under 69 and will start the third round just four shots off the lead.
“Today was a really good day, can’t ask for much more. Started 10 back and I’m now four back. This is a good result,” said Scott.
“When I won in 2013 I don’t think I missed a putt inside six feet for the week. And I’m going to have to kind of have that weekend here, if I really want to win.
“I mean, they all count the same, but it feels like those ones that you don’t want to let slip. And if I can sharpen that up a little, which I have every belief I will, if it’s just a little calmer generally out on the golf course.”
The leading Aussie after the first round, Marc Leishman didn’t fare quite so well at Augusta National on Friday.
The Victorian made just one birdie but found three bogeys including one on the 18th for the second consecutive day. He finished the round with a 2-over 74 to be 3-over the card and T19 after two rounds.
“There were some pretty big numbers out there to be had but if you could avoid those you weren’t going to be too far away,” said Leishman.
“With the leaders at 4-under and I am 3-over, I am only seven back. I’ll play a little more aggressive over the weekend and try to make up some ground.”
After a disappointing first round, amateur star and WA Open champ Curtis Luck was impressive at Augusta National on Friday.
He fired an even par round featuring three birdies and three bogeys to be tied 46th on 6-over and teeing it up in The Masters on the weekend.
“Yesterday was not the day I was hoping for, so I was a little unhappy, I could say. But today was good,” said Luck.
“All I was looking for today was to get that confidence back on how I’m hitting it and hopefully shoot a score that was good enough to make the cut.
“It would be lovely to be here for an extra two days and play tournament golf, rather than watching it.”
With Rickie Fowler missing a birdie putt at the 18th to set the outright lead at 5-under the card. With the lead at 4-under, Luck is safely through to the weekend based on the cut being made at the top-50 players and not 10 shots off the lead.
Also just making the cut on the number was World Number 3 Jason Day, who at one point in his round was inside the top-10.
Day was 1-under through the turn but then fired 41 on the back-9 to shoot 4-over 76 in the second round and to be tied 45th on 6-over the card heading into the weekend.
One Aussie not to have made the weekend was Rod Pampling who teed it up at Augusta National for the first time in 10 years.
He fired 6-over 78 today for a two round total of 8-over the card, missing the cut by two shots.
However Pampling did produce some magic at Augusta National chipping in for birdie on the par-3 4th.
The third round of The Masters tees off at 10.20am local time with Jason Day leading the field out playing alongside a marker.
Curtis Luck will play with 1987 Masters Champion Larry Mize. They tee off at 10.50am.
Marc Leishman will play with Lee Westwood teeing off at 1.10pm.
Adam Scott will play with his good friend and Olympic gold medallist Justin Rosee. They tee off at 2.20pm.
The final group of Charley Hoffman and Sergio Garcia are on course at 3pm.
