WA PGA to be decided by a final round shoot out

We are headed to a show down in the desert with Leigh McKechnie and Rory Bourke tied for the lead heading into the final round of the TX Civil & Logistics WA PGA Championship.

"RoryPlaying a group apart, Bourke and McKechnie each fired rounds of 1-under 71 to be tied on 9-under the card after three rounds.

McKechnie has played steady golf, not trying to overpower the Kalgoorlie Golf Course, capitalising on opportunities when they arise.

“I played fairly solid again today; just a couple of putts didn’t go. The greens are rolling very fast and true but I just misread a couple,” said McKechnie.

“I am not an attacking sort of golfer; I like to put myself in position to make a few putts so I will stick to that game plan and hopefully create some opportunities.”

McKechnie is looking to try and win his first title on the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia since the NSW Open in 2009.

“I have been out here for a long time, 20 years now, I have been in this position before and it is just a matter of playing to my strategy and hopefully I will be in with a chance tomorrow,” added McKechnie.

“There were a few years where I didn’t think I could do it again, but so long as I am in a position to win I am happy.”

At the other end of his career, Bourke is chasing his first win since turning Professional in 2013.

“A win would be massive, it would be everything, I would love it,” said Bourke.

“To win on Tour would be incredible, I would love to be out here for a few more years and a win would give me a bit more flexibility to try and play somewhere over there as well.”

But before he can lift the trophy he has to overcome a quality field on a layout that reminds him of his home course.

“I am a member at Eynesbury in Victoria which is also designed by Graham Marsh; it’s practically the same course. The grass is the same, the greens have swales, so it’s just like playing back home,” added Bourke.

“I am surprised that I hadn’t played that well here the past few years, I always thought I would but this year I seem to be doing something right.”

Sitting just one shot behind the leaders are Vic Open champion Dimitrios Papadatos and Queenslander Jack Munro.

New South Welshman Dale Brandt-Richards fired the best round of the day, his 6-under 66 moving him up to outright fifth on the leaderboard on 7-under the card.

A further shot back is Victorian Peter Wilson and New South Welshman Matthew Stieger while a group of eight players round out the top-10 on 5-under the card.

The final round of the TX Civil & Logistics WA PGA Championship tees off tomorrow at 7.30am with the final group of McKechnie and Bourke on course at 9.20am.

The final round will be live streamed on PGA TV from 10am local time, 12pm AEST via pga.org.au.
