South Australian Wade Ormsby overnight secured his spot in the U.S. Open during Sectional Qualifying at Walton Heath, it will be the first Major appearance in the 37-year-olds career.
114 players entered for the marathon day of 36 holes over both the old and new courses at Walton Heath with only 15 Professionals secured a start in the second Major of the year, two alternates were also confirmed.
Ormsby was the last player to make the qualifying cut with a score of 9-under 135 over the two courses, alongside six other players, forcing him in to a playoff to lock down the final qualifying spot. England’s Aaron Rai lead the field on 14-under par.
The South Australian was making his fourth attempt at qualifying for the U.S. Open but it has been 16 years since his last attempt.
It’s a fitting reward for the perennial place-getter whose last Professional victory came in the 2013 Panasonic Open India on the Asian Tour.
A regular on the European Tour, Ormsby’s best finish so far this year came in the ISPS HANDA World Super 6 Perth where he finished eighth in the inaugural event, a terrific result considering he spent most of 2016 on the sidelines with a neck injury.
Ormsby joins Jason Day, Adam Scott and Marc Leishman in the U.S. Open, to be played at Erin Hills from 12-18 June.
Just missing out on qualifying was Richard Green and amateur Harrison Endycott who finished 8-under par and one shot out of the playoff, Sam Brazel was a further two shots back on 6-under the card.
New Zealand’s Ryan Fox finished at 5-under the card along with Nick Cullen and Jarryd Felton while Scott Hend and Dimitrios Papadatos were a shot back again.
Travis Smyth was 3-under the card and amateur Min Woo Lee finished qualifying at 2-under par. Adam Blyth had a tough outing finishing 6-over the card while Andrew Dodt withdrew from qualifying following his top-10 finish at the BMW PGA Championship.
