Aussies Abroad: Trio chasing Asian Tour security

The setting is spectacular, the stakes significant as three Aussies seek to wrap up their 2020 Asian Tour cards at this week’s AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open at the Heritage Golf and Country Club in Mauritius.

Co-sanctioned with the European Tour, the idyllic island located in the Indian Ocean off the east coast of the African continent features four Australians, three of whom have made the mad dash from last week’s AJ Jennings New South Wales Open at Twin Creeks Golf and Country Club in western Sydney.

Courtesy of his runner-up finish at Twin Creeks Travis Smyth has jumped more than 400 places in the Official World Golf Rankings and enters this week 57th on the Asian Tour Order of Merit, the top 60 from the 2019 moneylist to earn exemption for the following season.

Inside the top 21 in four of his past six starts in Asia, Smyth is less than $US3,000 clear of the player in 61st position with three tournaments remaining in the season.

Another coming off a good week at Twin Creeks is Newcastle’s Jake Higginbottom, tied for seventh last week and sitting 55th on the Asian Tour Order of Merit.

Like Smyth, Higginbottom has found form of late in Asia, top 25 in three of his four most recent starts.

Less than $6,000 outside the top 60, West Australian Daniel Fix made the cut at Twin Creeks and was tied for eighth the week prior at the Sabah Masters to be 66th on the Order of Merit.

Peter Fowler is also lapping up a seaside setting this week at the second leg of the Staysure Tour’s MCB Tour Championship in the Seychelles while Ryan Ruffels and Harrison Endycott are seeking Korn Ferry Tour status in 2020 at the PGA TOUR-Latinoamerica season finale, the Shell Championship at Trump National Doral Golden Palm in Florida.
